Team17, the creators behind the iconic indie game ‘Worms’ have had quite the week. They recently announced their plans to launch their inaugural NFT project, ‘MetaWorms’. However, due to ample controversy from fellow partners and the community, the team decided to scrap the project (for now?).

The plan was to sell limited edition, eco-friendly computer-generated artworks by the company’s NFT partner, Reality Gaming Group, with a portion of the proceeds raised intended to go to Refeed Farms, a worm bed investment initiative from NFT sustainability firm Coin 4 Planet.

Hints of a 3D, glitter-covered version of the iconic worm artwork were dropped on the MetaWorm website, as well as on social media promotional posters.

But, for the juicy bit, several of the teams within Team17 were unaware of the company’s plan to launch the project prior to its public announcement on January 31st. In addition, some were apparently made aware of the plans after an official deal was struck, however, their disproval for the project was ignored as the announcement still went ahead.

Since the plans have reached Worms fans via the announcement, disapproval for the project has been universally observed across the game’s social media platforms. It is thought that the unrest surrounding the project may have arisen because of the inference that it emits, as the prospect of NFTs entering the indie games realm is something many are still averse to.

Team17 addressed these concerns, with a spokesperson stating: “Team17 is licensing the Worms brand to our newest third-party partner so they can produce collectible digital artwork based on one of the most beloved IPs in indie games, in a similar way to already available physical merchandise. Team17 has no plans to introduce NFTs or play-to-earn NFT mechanics into any of its indie games label titles”.

Despite this, the company posted this unfortunate tweet:

So we can safely conclude that the partnership couldn’t wriggle a way of getting fans onside with the project, and it has now been left in the dirt.
