Have you ever heard of a temple selling digital tokens? The Taiwanese Temple Dajia Jenn Lann does just that, selling thousands of NFTs to engage local pilgrimage followers.
Located in Taichung, about 100 miles south of Taipei, the temple organizes a nine-day, 100-mile journey featuring a statue of the sea goddess Mazu, which attracts thousands of enthusiastic followers. Now, participants can also purchase MazuDAO NFTs. Since the NFTs went on sale in August, the temple has sold over 2,800 of these tokens through its e-commerce platform, MazuBuyBuy.
Who is buying the Taiwanese temple NFTs?
Due to the popularity of the pilgrimage, many estimate the journey alone generates more than 5 billion Taiwan dollars ($163m). Well, now, with the temple selling NFTs, it is attracting a younger audience in addition to the already dedicated older followers, as they appeal to digital native generations who are interested in digital assets.
Jerry Yan, project lead of MazuDAO stated: “We had to set up promotional booths in front of the temple to introduce MazuDAO NFTs to those Web0 believers,” Yan said, adding that the temple also set up a landline customer service team to reach older followers. “Often on the phone, we’d ask them to call for their grandchildren to help out and set up crypto wallets on their behalf,” he said.
We’ve previously seen a temple venture into Web3 space with the Japanese Warrior Temple Metaverse project. But the MazuDAO is a physical temple offering NFTs and that combination of factors remains a rarity.
The NFT space offers unlimited possibilities and the MazuDAO project is just one example. Furthermore, the initiative stands as a reminder that the NFT space remains fertile ground for invention, innovation, and ingenious projects that touch multiple generations and cultures.
